Turn over your composting pile. You have been adding to it all winter, and it is now time to aerate the pile and create new growth. Composting is a simple way to add nutrient-rich soil which fuels plant growth and restores vitality to depleted soil. It is also free, easy to make and good for the environment!

Clean out last year’s plants. Some plants are perennials and will grow back from year to year so you will need to clean off all of the dead leaves and growth. This will allow for healthy new growth to come back. Other than that you should take out any plants that are fully dead.

Prep your soil as much as possible. This is the part where love of having the garden and dislike of hard work come into play. You will need to do as much work as possible to break up the soil. A rototiller can be extremely helpful for this! Digging up the soil is good as it aerates, loosens, and prepares it for planting. Make sure to add in compost, manure or other additives to add nutrients back into your soil.

Get your tools ready. Time to find your garden tools from the corner of your garage or shed and prepare them for the months ahead! It is always best to clean them off by scrubbing with an abrasive pad to get rid of any caked on dirt or rust. Coat the metal part with a light amount of oil and then store in a bucket of sand to keep them rust-free and sharp until planting time comes.

Plan your plants. What would you like to plant this year? Do your plants need shade or sun? Early or later planting? It’s helpful to pick out your crops early and plan your garden bed around them.

These steps will ensure that your garden is as successful as it can be! For more tips and tricks relating to gardening or home maintenance, stop by our Shorewest Blog for all the latest updates! #ShorewestRealtors #ShorewestTips
